When two students fail the same exam, their reactions can look completely different. One might punch a wall or go silent for days, while the other might break down in tears and immediately call a friend. These are not random reactions – they are shaped by a complex mix of biology, hormones, and social conditioning. Understanding how gender influences stress responses is essential for anyone working in human resource development, education, or mental health support.

The case of Arvind and Yasmeen
Consider two university students, Arvind and Yasmeen, who both fail their mid-term exams. Arvind’s immediate reaction is frustration. He slams his books shut, isolates himself from friends, and refuses to talk about the result. Over the next few days, he channels his anger into excessive gym sessions and avoids the subject entirely. Yasmeen, on the other hand, feels a wave of sadness. She calls her best friend, cries about the result, and then talks through what went wrong. Within days, she has already formed a study group to prepare for the next test.
Neither response is “wrong.” But they reveal a pattern that research on gender and stress has documented for decades: men and women frequently react to similar stressors in measurably different ways – both in what they feel and in what they do about it.
How boys and girls react to stress
Research consistently shows that gender plays a role in how people perceive and respond to stressful events. A study on college students found that female students reported higher overall levels of perceived stress than their male peers. Women in the study were also more likely to use emotion-focused coping strategies – such as seeking emotional support, venting, and self-distraction – compared to men.
This does not mean women handle stress poorly. It means they tend to process stress outwardly, through social interaction and emotional expression. Men, by contrast, are more likely to suppress emotional responses and rely on distraction, avoidance, or action-oriented problem-solving.
Externalising versus internalising
One of the clearest gender differences in stress response is the direction of the reaction. Research from UF Health found that males tend to display outward, aggressive reactions to acute stress, while females have a much greater tendency to internalise their responses. This distinction may contribute to the higher prevalence of anxiety and depression among women, and higher rates of aggression and substance misuse among men.
In a classroom or workplace, this means a stressed-out male student or employee might appear angry, dismissive, or withdrawn – while a stressed-out female counterpart might seem anxious, tearful, or unusually talkative. Recognising both patterns is critical for teachers, HR professionals, and managers who want to provide effective support.
Emotional versus behavioural coping
Psychologists broadly categorise coping strategies into two types: emotion-focused coping and problem-focused coping. Emotion-focused coping involves managing the emotional distress that a stressful situation creates – talking it out, journaling, seeking comfort from others. Problem-focused coping is about taking direct action to change the situation itself – making a plan, seeking information, or removing the stressor.
A large-scale study of over 2,800 participants found that women more frequently used coping strategies that involved verbalisation, seeking emotional support, rumination, and positive self-talk. Women also tended to perceive stressors as more severe than men, which may actually motivate them to expend more effort in managing those threats.
Men, on the other hand, were more likely to use problem-focused coping or avoidance strategies. When facing exam failure, for example, a male student like Arvind might jump straight to revising harder – or avoid thinking about the failure altogether. A female student like Yasmeen might first process the emotional weight of the failure before moving to action.
Social support as a coping tool
One of the most consistent findings across studies is that women are significantly more likely to seek social support when stressed. This includes talking to friends, family, or colleagues about what they are going through. Research conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic confirmed that women were more likely to use strategies like emotional support and acceptance, and these strategies were associated with greater resilience in the face of anxiety.
Men, particularly in cultures that emphasise traditional masculinity, often avoid seeking social support. They may view it as a sign of weakness. This can leave them more vulnerable to negative outcomes like substance use or chronic emotional suppression. Studies show that men are more likely than women to turn to alcohol as a coping mechanism during stressful periods.
The role of rumination
Women are more likely to engage in rumination – the tendency to repeatedly think about the causes and consequences of a stressful event. While rumination can help with processing, excessive rumination is linked to higher rates of depression and anxiety. Men are less likely to ruminate but more likely to suppress their emotions, which carries its own long-term mental health risks, including difficulty identifying and expressing feelings.
Psychological differences in stress response
Beyond behaviour, the biological differences in stress response between men and women are significant. Stress activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which triggers the release of cortisol – commonly known as the stress hormone. However, the way this system functions is influenced by sex hormones like oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.
Hormonal influences
Women’s stress responses are heavily influenced by fluctuating reproductive hormones. Oestrogen and progesterone affect mood regulation, and dips in these hormones – during menstruation, postpartum, or menopause – can amplify feelings of anxiety and irritability under stress. Research published in the journal Current Opinion in Behavioral Sciences has shown that oestrogen interacts with oxytocin systems in ways that may reduce stress-related HPA axis activity in women, meaning that oestrogen can have a calming effect under certain conditions – but the picture is complex and context-dependent.
In men, testosterone plays a dampening role in the stress response. A UC Davis study published in PNAS found that testosterone is the key hormone driving gender-based differences in responses to social stress. Before puberty, boys and girls respond to social stress similarly. After puberty, testosterone reshapes the male brain’s stress circuitry, making males less reactive to social threats. When researchers removed the source of testosterone in male mice before puberty, those mice responded to stress in the same way as adult females.
Fight-or-flight versus tend-and-befriend
For decades, the dominant model of stress response was the fight-or-flight model – the idea that when threatened, organisms either confront the threat or flee from it. But this model was largely built on research involving male subjects. In 2000, psychologist Shelley Taylor and her colleagues at UCLA proposed an alternative model for females: tend-and-befriend.
The tend-and-befriend model suggests that women, when stressed, are more inclined to nurture and protect their dependants (tending) and seek out social alliances for mutual support (befriending). This response is linked to the hormone oxytocin, which is released at higher levels in women under stress and promotes bonding and caregiving behaviour. Oxytocin, in conjunction with female reproductive hormones, appears to counterbalance the cortisol-driven fight-or-flight response.
Men can also tend-and-befriend – the response is not exclusive to women. But the combination of higher testosterone and lower oxytocin activity under stress makes men statistically more likely to default to fight-or-flight responses: either confronting the problem head-on or withdrawing from it entirely.
The role of socialisation
Biology is only part of the story. Two major hypotheses explain gender differences in coping: the socialisation hypothesis and the role-constraint hypothesis. The socialisation hypothesis argues that boys and girls are raised with different expectations. Girls are encouraged to express emotions, seek help, and build close relationships. Boys are often taught to be stoic, self-reliant, and action-oriented. These patterns become deeply embedded by adulthood and shape how each gender responds to stress.
The role-constraint hypothesis takes a different angle. It suggests that when men and women occupy the same roles – say, the same job with the same responsibilities – gender differences in coping diminish. Research on role constraint found that men and women in similar role situations generally did not differ in how they coped with stressors, though women still reported using more social support. This suggests that many observed gender differences may be tied to the different social roles men and women occupy, rather than to inherent biological traits alone.
What this means for workplaces and classrooms
Understanding gender differences in stress is not about reinforcing stereotypes. It is about recognising patterns so that support systems can be designed more effectively. An employee assistance programme that only offers problem-solving workshops may miss the needs of employees who cope through social support and emotional processing. A school counsellor who only watches for angry outbursts may overlook the quietly anxious student internalising her stress.
Here are some practical considerations:
Create multiple support channels. Offer both action-oriented resources (workshops, skill-building sessions) and emotional support channels (peer groups, counselling, mentoring). This ensures that people with different coping styles have access to what they need.
Train managers and teachers to spot different stress signals. Aggression, withdrawal, increased alcohol use, absenteeism, tearfulness, over-talking, perfectionism – these are all potential indicators of stress, and they can look very different across individuals.
Challenge rigid gender norms around coping. Encouraging men to talk about their feelings and women to take decisive action when needed helps everyone develop a broader, more flexible coping toolkit. Research shows that relying on a single coping strategy – whether purely emotional or purely problem-focused – is less effective than using a mix of approaches.
Account for biological factors. Recognise that hormonal fluctuations can affect stress reactivity. This is relevant for understanding stress in women during different life stages and for understanding why young men post-puberty may display more aggressive stress responses than they did as boys.
Moving beyond stereotypes
It is important to remember that gender differences in stress response are patterns, not rules. Individual variation within each gender is enormous. Some men are highly emotionally expressive under stress; some women are stoic and action-oriented. Personality, upbringing, culture, and lived experience all interact with biology to produce a unique stress profile for each person.
The case of Arvind and Yasmeen is a useful illustration, not a universal law. What matters most is that those around them – teachers, colleagues, managers, friends – understand that stress wears different faces and provide environments where every kind of response is met with support, not judgment.
