When a child builds a tower of blocks and knocks it down, races across the playground, or plays “shop” with a friend, something far more significant than fun is happening. Play is how children make sense of the world around them. Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics confirms that developmentally appropriate play promotes social-emotional, cognitive, language, and self-regulation skills – in short, it builds the architecture of a growing mind. Yet in many schools and homes, play is increasingly being squeezed out in favour of structured academics. Understanding why play matters so deeply, across every dimension of development, is essential for anyone involved in raising or educating children.

Physical and motor skills: moving to grow
Physical play does much more than keep children active. Every time a child runs, jumps, climbs, or even picks up a crayon, they are strengthening neural pathways and building motor competence that underpins learning across all areas. Motor skills are broadly divided into two types: gross motor skills – large-body movements like running and balancing – and fine motor skills, which involve precise movements of the hands and fingers for tasks like writing, cutting, and drawing.
Research published in PMC makes two clear conclusions: playing helps children develop their motor skills, and spending more time in active play contributes directly to good physical health. Children who play passively – such as spending long hours on touchscreen devices – can experience a measurable decline in motor skills. Early childhood is widely considered the “golden age” for motor development, as the nervous system is at its most receptive to stimulation during this window.
Evidence from the Education Endowment Foundation shows that physical development approaches are most effective when tasks are varied in difficulty, combine instruction with active play, and are delivered regularly – ideally three or more times per week. Fine motor development, which includes hand muscle strength and wrist movement, also facilitates critical independence skills like eating, dressing, and eventually handwriting. The connection between body and brain is inseparable: evidence from Frontiers in Public Health indicates that motor development promotes brain development in regions such as the cerebellum and prefrontal cortex, with consequences that extend far beyond physical fitness alone.
Language development: talk, play, grow
Language and play are deeply intertwined from the very start of life. When children play – especially with others – they are continuously practising the vocabulary, sentence structure, and communication skills they need to succeed academically and socially. According to NIH research, playing and talking to babies and children are vital for their language development, and children who talk with their parents during play tend to build a vocabulary that significantly helps them later in school.
The connection goes even deeper than vocabulary. Research reviewed by the Child Mind Institute shows that symbolic play has been linked to both expressive and receptive language development. Children who engage in elaborate pretend play and sociodramatic play demonstrate more advanced language skills – including more sophisticated verbal utterances and narrative ability – compared to children engaged in other types of play. One notable study found that preschool children given blocks to play with at home, with minimal adult direction, showed measurable improvements in language acquisition over a six-month follow-up period.
Interestingly, advanced motor skills in infancy and toddlerhood have also been found to be related to greater language fluency in later childhood. Researchers at Eastern Connecticut State University suggest this connection may be partly due to the links between motor coordination, brain development, and the physical actions required for fluent speech. Play, then, doesn’t just teach children what to say – it builds the neurological foundation for how to say it.
Cognitive growth: thinking through play
Play is a child’s primary cognitive workout. Through games with rules, building activities, and imaginative scenarios, children constantly engage in planning, strategising, problem-solving, and flexible thinking – all components of what researchers call executive function. Studies from the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at TCU show that play promotes cognitive development not just by engaging children in skills like problem-solving and creativity, but also by removing barriers to learning – reducing fear, anxiety, and stress – which themselves hinder cognitive progress.
Soviet psychologist Lev Vygotsky, whose insights on play continue to be validated by researchers today, identified social make-believe play as the ideal context for cognitive development. When children create imaginary situations, they strengthen their ability to follow internal ideas and social rules – rather than acting on impulse – and can rehearse activities they are not yet ready to perform in real life. Research highlighted by Florida Atlantic University further shows that play-based preschool approaches, compared to direct instruction, yield more significant long-term advantages in academic performance and children’s attitudes toward learning, even if direct instruction sometimes shows more immediate results.
The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that play can improve children’s abilities to plan, organise, get along with others, and regulate emotions – and also helps with language, mathematics, and social skills. Engaging in play with building blocks, for instance, has been linked to stronger spatial skills, laying an early foundation for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning.
Socio-emotional development: learning to live with others
Some of the most important lessons children learn – empathy, cooperation, self-regulation, and coping with disappointment – are learned not in a classroom but on a playground. Play provides a uniquely safe context for experimenting with social behaviour, making mistakes, and navigating complex interpersonal dynamics.
The Child Mind Institute notes that childhood happiness itself – what researchers term subjective well-being – is linked to higher levels of empathy, social competence, self-regulation, resilience, and academic achievement, all of which are nurtured through play. Through cooperative games and group play, children learn to negotiate rules, take turns, handle conflict, and consider other perspectives. These are not simply “soft skills” – they form the basis of prosocial behaviour throughout life.
The Child Mind Institute also reports that children who engage in more frequent pretend play have been found to have more advanced understanding of others’ mental states – known as theory of mind – as well as stronger emotion regulation and control. Pretend play allows children to act out emotions they may not be directly feeling, helping them develop empathy and emotional flexibility. A PMC-published review of cooperative game-based programs found that play interventions led to measurable increases in prosocial behaviour, reductions in aggressive interactions, and improvement in children’s global self-concept, particularly their social and emotional self-perception. When children play together, they are not just having fun – they are rehearsing the emotional skills they will rely on throughout their lives.
Play as a stress buffer
Play also serves as an important emotional regulator. Research cited by HealthyChildren.org found that children aged three to four who were anxious about entering preschool were two times more likely to feel less stressed when allowed to play beforehand. The mutual joy and one-on-one interaction that happen during play can directly manage the body’s stress response – making play not just developmentally enriching but genuinely therapeutic.
Creativity and imagination: making something from nothing
Creativity is not an innate talent that some children are simply born with – it is a capacity that is built, and play is one of its most powerful building tools. When children engage in open-ended play, they are continuously generating new ideas, adapting to unexpected scenarios, and thinking in flexible, non-linear ways.
Research from the British Council explains that when children engage in pretend play with peers, acting out roles and characters in self-created scenarios, they must adapt to a constantly changing narrative – exercising creative thinking skills in real time. There are no fixed answers, no right or wrong outcomes. Children have creative control, and that autonomy is central to building creative capacity.
The Child Mind Institute highlights that pretend play is inherently open-ended, allowing children to think creatively about how objects can serve new purposes – using a box as a crib, a stick as a magic wand. This kind of divergent thinking, where children explore multiple solutions to a problem, is precisely the type of cognitive flexibility associated with innovation later in life. Studies referenced by Kids First Services further show that children who engage in pretend play exhibit enhanced creativity and flexibility in thinking, more complex language use, and better academic performance, particularly in literacy and mathematics.
Crucially, research comparing preschoolers playing independently with blocks to those watching educational videos found that the children at play independently developed stronger language and cognitive skills. The AAP confirms that real-time social play and interaction remain superior to digital media for learning in early childhood – a finding that carries clear implications for how parents and educators structure children’s time.
Why protecting play matters
Despite the overwhelming body of evidence supporting the role of play in development, free play is diminishing. NIH research indicates that in recent decades, children have lost an average of eight hours of free play per week. Recess is being cut, academic pressure is starting earlier, and screen time is filling the gaps. The consequences are real: reduced motor competence, weaker social skills, and less resilience in the face of stress.
A study published in PubMed from Utrecht University argues that stimulating play behaviour enhances a child’s adaptability to stressful conditions and promotes cognitive, social, emotional, and psychomotor functioning – strengthening the foundation for future health. Play is not a reward for finishing work. It is not a break from learning. It is, for children, the primary means of learning – physically, linguistically, cognitively, socially, and creatively. The challenge for parents and educators alike is to resist the pressure to replace it, and instead to protect and enrich it.
