It emerges from a continuous, dynamic interaction between your genetic makeup and the environments you encounter throughout life. Contemporary experts acknowledge that both nature and nurture play a role in psychological development and interact in complex ways . Understanding how genetics and environment work together – rather than compete – is essential for anyone studying human resource development, education, or psychology. This post breaks down the key mechanisms through which nature and nurture jointly shape who we become.

Research spanning 50 years of twin studies involving over 14.5 million pairs shows that psychological traits result from approximately a 50-50 split between genetic and environmental factors, though this varies significantly by trait .
This does not mean that half of your personality is “locked in” at birth. Rather, genes create predispositions – tendencies that make certain outcomes more likely under certain conditions. A child may inherit genetic variants associated with high cognitive ability, but whether those genes translate into actual intellectual achievement depends heavily on environmental factors like educational opportunities, nutrition, and emotional support .
How twin and adoption studies reveal genetic influence
Twin studies have shown that identical twins reared apart tend to have more similar personalities than fraternal twins, indicating a genetic component to personality . This is a powerful finding because identical twins share 100% of their DNA, while fraternal twins share roughly 50%. When identical twins separated at birth still display similar temperament, interests, and behavioural patterns, it strongly suggests that genetic inheritance plays a significant role.
However, genes rarely work alone in determining personality outcomes. Sensitivity to environmental adversities and benefits may be conditional on genetic background, and nature-nurture interactions may be of greater importance than direct gene-trait associations . In other words, a genetic tendency toward anxiety, for example, does not guarantee an anxious personality. It simply means the individual may be more responsive to stressful environments than someone without that genetic tendency.
The role of epigenetics
One of the most important discoveries in recent decades is the field of epigenetics – the study of how environmental factors can alter gene expression without changing the DNA sequence itself. Experiences such as early-life adversity can affect how parts of a person’s genetic code are expressed, demonstrating that environment can literally influence biology . Chronic stress, poor nutrition, and trauma can switch certain genes on or off, and some of these changes may even carry across generations. This means that the environment does not just interact with genes; it can reshape their very functioning.
Environmental reinforcement: upbringing, social exposure, and cultural norms
While genes set a range of possibilities, the environment determines which of those possibilities are realised. Environmental influences begin at conception and continue throughout life. They include family dynamics, parenting styles, peer relationships, cultural expectations, socioeconomic conditions, education, and even random life events.
The power of parenting and family environment
The family is typically a child’s first and most influential environment. Parents shape behaviour through direct instruction, modelling, reinforcement, and discipline. Research by Chess and Thomas found that guiding parents to modify their own behaviour to match their children’s temperaments was more effective than focusing on conflicts and anxieties . This underscores that the quality of parenting – and specifically how well it adapts to the child’s natural disposition – matters greatly for personality development.
A child who is naturally cautious may become more confident and socially skilled if raised in a warm, encouraging family. Conversely, a naturally outgoing child may become withdrawn if exposed to harsh or neglectful parenting. The family environment acts as the earliest filter through which genetic potential is expressed.
Peer influence and cultural norms
Beyond the family, peers and culture exert substantial influence on personality. In the case of personality traits, non-shared environmental effects are often found to outweigh shared environmental effects . This means that experiences unique to the individual – such as specific friendships, school environments, or personal challenges – often have a greater impact on personality than the family environment shared with siblings.
Cultural norms also play a defining role. Although the notion of temperament is widely acknowledged as universal, the degree to which certain traits are valued, expressed, and encouraged can vary considerably across cultures . For instance, a culture that highly values collectivism may reinforce compliant and cooperative behaviour, while a culture emphasising individualism may reward assertiveness and independence. These cultural forces shape which genetic tendencies are amplified and which are suppressed.
The goodness-of-fit model: when temperament meets environment
One of the most influential frameworks for understanding the nature-nurture interaction in personality development is the goodness-of-fit model, proposed by psychiatrists Stella Chess and Alexander Thomas. This model arose from their landmark New York Longitudinal Study, which tracked children’s temperament from infancy into adulthood beginning in the 1950s.
What is goodness of fit?
According to Chess and Thomas, goodness of fit occurs when the properties of the environment and its expectations and demands are in accord with the individual’s own capacities, characteristics, and style of behaving . When there is a match between a person’s temperament and their surroundings, the conditions for healthy psychological development are present. When there is a mismatch – what they called poorness of fit – the result can be stress, behavioural problems, and maladaptive development.
For example, consider a child with a slow-to-warm-up temperament placed in a fast-paced, high-pressure classroom. The mismatch between the child’s natural approach and the environmental demands can lead to anxiety and underperformance. But place that same child in a patient, supportive learning environment, and they may thrive. The child’s temperament has not changed – only the fit between temperament and environment.
Three temperament types
Thomas and Chess identified that approximately 65% of children fit one of three broad temperament patterns: about 40% were categorised as easy, 10% as difficult, and 15% as slow to warm up . The remaining children showed mixed patterns. These categories – now often referred to as adaptable, intense, and slow-to-warm-up – describe general tendencies in mood, regularity, adaptability, and emotional intensity.
Importantly, when there is poor goodness of fit, such as a difficult child being raised in an overly rigid environment, it can lead to challenges in behaviour and emotional regulation . The model does not label any temperament as inherently “good” or “bad.” Instead, it emphasises that outcomes depend on how well the environment accommodates the individual’s natural style.
Goodness of fit across cultures
The goodness-of-fit model also has important cultural dimensions. Cross-cultural studies of temperament demonstrate that the interaction between ecology, temperament, and culture can impact an individual’s development . Research by De Vries (1974) on Masai infants in East Africa, for instance, found that more demanding infants were more likely to survive during famine periods because their temperament led to greater parental attention. A temperament trait that might be considered “difficult” in one cultural context can be highly adaptive in another.
How individuals shape their own environments
One of the most fascinating aspects of the nature-nurture interaction is that people are not passive recipients of their environment. From an early age, individuals actively influence and even select the environments they inhabit – and these choices are often driven by their genetic predispositions. Psychologists describe this process through three types of genotype-environment correlations.
Passive genotype-environment correlation
Passive genotype-environment correlation occurs when children passively inherit both the genes and the environments their family provides . For example, parents who are naturally athletic may pass on both the genes for physical ability and an environment rich in sports opportunities. The child does not choose this pairing – it happens automatically through the family structure.
Evocative genotype-environment correlation
Evocative genotype-environment correlation refers to the association between an individual’s genetically influenced behaviour and others’ reactions to that behaviour . A child who is naturally cheerful and sociable tends to receive more positive attention from adults and peers, which further reinforces their social confidence. A child who is temperamentally irritable may provoke harsher responses from caregivers, which can, unfortunately, intensify behavioural difficulties. The environment, in this case, is reacting to the child’s genetic tendencies.
Active genotype-environment correlation (niche picking)
As people mature and gain greater autonomy, they begin to actively select environments that match their genetic inclinations. This process is known as niche picking. Active genotype-environment correlation occurs when individuals seek out environments that support their genetic tendencies – for example, children who are musically inclined seek out music instruction and opportunities that facilitate their natural ability .
In 1983, psychology professors Sandra Scarr and Kathleen McCartney proposed a developmental theory emphasising how genotypes actively shape environments, challenging purely environmental explanations of development . Their model suggests that as children grow older, passive and evocative correlations diminish while active correlations increase. Active genotype-environment correlation increases as people age, while passive correlation is strongest in childhood . This explains why siblings raised in the same household can develop very different personalities – as they grow, each sibling gravitates toward different social and experiential niches aligned with their unique genetic profile.
The feedback loop between genes and chosen environments
Niche picking creates a powerful feedback loop. A genetically extraverted teenager may join a drama club, which exposes them to more social interaction, further reinforcing their extraversion. A child with a genetic tendency toward extroversion may actively seek out social situations, creating feedback loops that reinforce their social development . Over time, the chosen environment becomes so intertwined with the genetic tendency that separating “nature” from “nurture” becomes nearly impossible.
This concept has major implications for human resource development. In the workplace, individuals often gravitate toward roles, teams, and organisational cultures that align with their personality. An employee with high conscientiousness may seek structured, goal-oriented environments, while a creative thinker may be drawn to flexible, innovation-driven settings. Understanding this process helps HR professionals design roles and teams that leverage natural strengths rather than working against them.
Why the nature vs. nurture debate is outdated
Beginning at the moment of conception, hereditary potential unfolds in concert with the environment. The dynamic interplay between gene action and environmental processes continues throughout life . The old question of “nature or nurture?” has been replaced by a far more productive question: How do nature and nurture work together?
Modern research makes it clear that genes provide the raw material – a set of potentials and vulnerabilities. The environment then determines which of those potentials are realised, amplified, or suppressed. And the individual, through their own behaviour and choices, actively shapes the very environments that act back upon them. A person’s biological nature can affect their experience of the environment – for instance, a person with a genetic disposition toward aggressiveness may be more likely to have particular life experiences, including receiving negative reactions from others .
A child with an inherited vulnerability to antisocial personality is much less likely to develop this disorder in supportive, nonstressful family, school, and community environments . This is a hopeful finding. It means that while we cannot change our genes, we can design environments – in families, schools, and workplaces – that bring out the best in people, regardless of their genetic starting point.
