Every child has the potential to learn, yet millions fall behind academically – not because of a lack of intelligence, but because of obstacles that have little to do with the classroom itself. Poverty, hunger, missed school days, harmful labels, and low motivation are among the most persistent barriers to academic success. Understanding these challenges is the first step to addressing them thoughtfully and effectively.

Effects of poverty and malnutrition on learning
Before a child can focus on reading or arithmetic, their most basic needs must be met. A hungry child simply cannot learn at the same level as a well-nourished one. According to the UN World Food Programme, the brain consumes around 20% of our daily caloric intake, and for a child’s brain to develop properly, it needs the right balance of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. When children are deprived of these nutrients, cognitive development is delayed – and that delay has lasting consequences for academic performance.
Research published in SAGE Open Medicine found that malnutrition is a significant risk factor for high absenteeism, early school dropout, low enrollment, and unsatisfactory classroom performance among school-age children. The effects are not limited to physical growth – a systematic review in BMJ Open found moderate evidence linking childhood malnutrition to impaired neurodevelopment and poorer academic achievement across childhood and into adolescence.
Concern Worldwide notes that malnutrition is also associated with behavioural challenges such as irritability, anxiety, aggression, and impulsivity – all of which make it harder for children to engage with lessons or maintain relationships with teachers and peers. Children who are hungry or poorly nourished often begin prioritising the search for food over attending school, creating a cycle that is difficult to break without direct intervention.
Poverty compounds these effects significantly. A scoping review in the journal Nutrients found that families facing financial constraints struggle to afford nutritious food, access healthcare, and create a stable home environment for learning. The cycle is cruel and self-reinforcing: poverty leads to malnutrition, which leads to poor school performance, which limits future earning potential, which perpetuates poverty across generations.
What schools and communities can do
School feeding programmes have been shown to be one of the most effective interventions. The WFP estimates that providing school meals results in approximately a 9% increase in enrolment – and up to 12% for girls. Each dollar invested in school meals can yield up to $10 in economic return for communities. For educators and policymakers, advocating for nutrition-focused interventions is not separate from academic work – it is central to it.
Irregular school attendance and academic failure
Missed school days add up quickly, and research consistently shows the consequences are serious. A study published in Oxford Review of Education found that higher absenteeism rates are associated with poorer academic achievement, increased risk of high school dropout, and lower educational attainment later in life. When students miss lessons, they miss teacher-led instruction, peer interaction, and learning-enhancing activities that are difficult to replicate outside the classroom.
Research in Learning and Instruction using data from over 62,000 secondary school students confirmed that almost every additional absence – regardless of its cause or the student’s socioeconomic background – leads to a measurable decrease in academic achievement. Unexcused absences are particularly harmful, especially when they occur at the beginning or end of the school year, when foundational learning is often consolidated.
Attendance Works highlights an important and often overlooked dimension: chronic absence harms not just the student who is absent, but the entire classroom. When absenteeism is widespread, teachers spend more time reteaching missed content, disrupting the learning flow for students who attend regularly. Schools where students miss an average of 10 or more days have proficiency rates that drop dramatically – sometimes falling below 20% in both mathematics and literacy.
Breaking the attendance barrier
Regular attendance must be treated as an educational priority, not just a disciplinary matter. A study in AERA Open recommends a multiagency approach – involving teachers, health workers, social services, and families together – to understand and address the root causes of absenteeism. Practical supports such as tutoring, catch-up programmes, and clear guidance for parents on helping children recover missed content can significantly reduce the academic damage caused by absences.
Labeling and comparison: the hidden damage
The words adults use to describe children carry significant weight – far more than many realise. When teachers, parents, or peers label a child as “slow,” “lazy,” or “not academic,” those words can become part of how the child sees themselves. Research published in The Conversation confirms that labelling children – even with seemingly harmless descriptors – directly affects their identity formation and can hold them back from reaching their potential.
A multilevel meta-analysis published in Educational Psychology Review, drawing on data from over 8,000 participants across 60 experiments, found a moderately negative overall effect of diagnostic labels on children’s academic evaluations, behavioural assessments, and personality ratings. Crucially, the study found that presenting a label alone – without accompanying context – produced the strongest negative effect, suggesting that a single word or phrase can powerfully shape how others perceive a child’s abilities.
Comparing children’s performance to one another causes similar harm. Research in Frontiers in Psychology on the Big-Fish-Little-Pond Effect found that students who are consistently compared to higher-achieving peers develop lower academic self-concepts – a negative perception of their own abilities – even when their actual performance has not changed. This effect is particularly pronounced when comparisons happen within the classroom, where students have direct knowledge of each other’s performance.
Labelling theory in education further shows that when students internalise negative labels, they may begin to seek out peers who share those labels and form subcultures that reject academic success altogether. This is not a failure of character – it is a predictable psychological response to repeated stigmatisation. Students stop trying not because they lack ability, but because they have been convinced that effort will not change the outcome.
Reframing how we talk about children’s performance
The solution is not to abandon all evaluation, but to shift the focus from fixed labels to modifiable processes. Educators and researchers at Universidad Nebrija suggest linking feedback to effort and process rather than ability or outcome. Instead of saying a child is “clever” or “slow,” adults can acknowledge the effort invested, identify next steps, and communicate a belief in the child’s capacity to improve. This small but consistent shift can protect a child’s self-concept and sustain their motivation.
Encouraging learning motivation in struggling students
Motivation is not a fixed trait – it is something that can be nurtured. Harvard Graduate School of Education researchers emphasise that every student is motivated in some way; the challenge is identifying what drives each individual and designing learning experiences that tap into that drive. The key framework here is Self-Determination Theory (SDT), which identifies three core psychological needs that, when met, increase intrinsic motivation: autonomy (a sense of control over one’s learning), competence (the belief that one is capable), and relatedness (feeling connected to teachers and peers).
Research from Harvard shows that once students begin to perceive themselves as competent in a subject, they develop stronger intrinsic motivation – even when they encounter obstacles. Teachers can build this sense of competence by setting tasks that are optimally challenging – difficult enough to stretch a student’s thinking, but achievable enough to allow success. Providing non-critical, constructive feedback alongside guidance on how to improve keeps the focus on growth rather than judgment.
Practical strategies for teachers and parents
Several approaches have strong evidence behind them:
Give students choice. Edutopia and Learning Focused both highlight that offering students some voice in how they learn – whether selecting a topic, choosing how to demonstrate understanding, or setting their own goals – significantly boosts engagement and ownership of learning.
Celebrate incremental progress. Breaking tasks into small, manageable steps and acknowledging every milestone – no matter how minor it seems – activates the brain’s natural reward pathways and builds a student’s sense of achievement over time. Progress, not perfection, should be the measure.
Connect learning to real life. Waterford.org notes that students are more likely to engage with content that feels relevant to their lives and personal interests. Teachers who take time to understand what their students care about – and weave those interests into lessons – see meaningfully higher levels of engagement.
Provide regular, constructive feedback. Immediate and specific feedback tells students exactly where they stand and what to do next. Allowing students to revise and resubmit work after feedback sends a powerful message: learning is an ongoing process, not a single high-stakes moment.
Build belonging. Students who feel safe, valued, and connected to their classroom community are far more likely to stay motivated. A warm, non-judgmental relationship with a teacher can be the single most important factor in turning around a struggling student’s experience of school.
